In winter, the area attracts skiers and snowboarders, while in the spring and summer the warm days are ideal for golfing, cycling, swimming in Kootenay Lake or riding the rapids of Kicking Horse River.

The Kootenay Rockies' economy is firmly based in tourism, forestry, small business, and mining. Travel by car is convenient and scenic on the major highways in the Rockies, and the area is also served well by air travel, including flights from Vancouver and Calgary. Larger centres in this area include Revelstoke, Cranbrook, and Trail, and smaller historic towns such as Nelson abound as well. No matter which part of the region you are in, you'll find a strong sense of community that will make you feel right at home.

The Kootenay Rockies geographic region is made up of two health authorities; the Interior Health Authority and Provincial Health Services Authority.
